John Thomas O’Malley, Captain, United States Navy
Commander, Navy Special Warfare Group 5
Randolph Air Force Base, Texas
Captain John “Jack” O’Malley recently assumed command of the newly created Navy Special Warfare Group Five at Randolph Air Force Base, near San Antonio, Texas. Navy Special Warfare Group Five, or NSWG-5, was created to support joint Cyber Command at Lackland Air Force Base and the CYBERCOMM mission to combat electronic warfare and various other threats to national security as determined by US Special Operations Command or USSOCOM. Captain O’Malley is a native of New York, New York. He is the son of Irish immigrants who settled in the Irish community of Norwood in the Bronx.
His military career began as an enlisted Marine Corps Helicopter Mechanic. While in the Marine Corps, he attained the rank of Corporal. After graduating from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Aeronautical Engineering, he had a slight break in service. He rejoined the United States Navy and entered Officer Candidate School at Naval Station Newport, Rhode Island, where he met all requirements, and was commissioned into the United States Navy.
Upon graduation from from Navy OCS, he was accepted into the Navy Flight Training Program and successfully completed all requirements. He received his first assignment to at Naval Air Station Oceana, Virginia. After a short career as a Navy helicopter pilot, he applied for and was accepted into Basic Underwater Demolition School or BUD/S.
Upon completion of BUD/S and SEAL Qualification Training, he received his SEAL Trident in 1989. During his tenure as a Navy SEAL, Jack received his Masters of Arts Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from US Naval War College. His paper, Pragmatic Tactics of Small Unit Warfare at the Battle of Thermopylae is currently required reading at the US Naval Academy. Jack’s command experience includes, SEAL Team Leader, SEAL Team Two Commander at Little Creek Virginia, SEAL Team Five Commander at Coronado, California, and Executive Officer for the Commander of Naval Special Development Group in Dam Neck, Virginia.
In the SEAL community, Jack is affectionately known as “Rock”.
Anna Marie Espinoza-Santiago
System Administrator, 1427 Communications Group
Randolph Air Force Base, Texas
Anna Santiago is a native of San Antonio, Texas. She is graduate of John Marshal High School and Texas A&I University (now Texas A&M) at Kingsville. She enrolled as a dual major in Computer Science and Mathematics and received her Bachelor of Science degrees. She married Marc Santiago of Harlingen, Texas. Mr. and Mrs. Santiago moved to Austin where Marc attended Law School and worked as an intern at for Texas State Representative of the 20th District Juan Hidalgo. While in Austin, she enrolled and was appointed to the LeCordon Bleu School of Culinary Arts. She received her chef’s training moved back to the South Texas Valley where she took on a position as a sous chef and later became the Executive Chief at Rancho Viejo Resort and Country Club.
Anna’s culinary mastery has been recognized by heads of state including Governor and later President George W. Bush. Her press credits include; Texas Monthly, Good Housekeeping, and Southern Living. She has been bestowed the James Beard Award for Rising Star Chef and Top Chef. During her tenure at Rancho Viejo Resort and Country Club, she opened and managed Palmas Catering which is still one of the top grossing catering companies in Texas. She retreated from the kitchen after the untimely death of her husband and daughter, Alyssa. She returned to San Antonio and to her technology roots when she applied for a system administrator’s training position within the Department of Defense at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. After her initial training period, she received an assignment as an information systems technician with a branch of 1427th Communications Squadron at Randolph Air Force Base, Texas.
